Lady Bulldogs fall short in Region XXIII semi-finals vs. Co-Lin, 63-57

CLINTON --- The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs took the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves to the final buzzer here Thursday night in the Region XXIII Tournament but came up short and fell 63-57.

With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs ended the season at 18-9.

The Lady Bulldogs started the game off hot and held a 12-8 lead over Co-Lin with five minutes to play in the first period after Kamelia Lacy hit two free throws. Holmes still led 12-10 with 3:11 left to play in the period after a Vaquela Pimpton layup. The game was tied at 14 after one period of play.

Holmes held an 18-14 lead with 8:30 left in the second period after Ja'Breonia Veasey drove in for a layup. A Lacy three-pointer put Holmes up 26-21 with 2:20 left in the second period. Co-Lin hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds left in the second period to put Co-Lin up one at halftime, 27-26.

The Lady Bulldogs led 30-29 with eight minutes left to play in the third when Nina Carpenter scored in the lane. Co-Lin then held a 32-30 lead with 6:48 left in the third and 37-35 with 3:46 left in the third. Tyaira Wilson hit two free throws shortly after to tie the game at 37. At the end of the third, Jonja'Nay Spivey and Pimpton each hit buckets to tie the game at 43 after three periods of play.

Co-Lin led 50-46 with 7:40 left in the game and led by eight at 60-52 with 25.9 seconds left. The Lady Bulldogs got it to 61-57 after Lacy hit a three-pointer and was fouled. She missed her free throw, and Nina Carpenter put it back in with 12.5 seconds left in the game.

Lacy led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points while Carpenter had 12. Carpenter finished with eight rebounds while Pimpton and Wilson each had seven.

Holmes shot 37.9 percent from the floor and 69.2 percent from the free-throw line.
