Covington signs with the Holmes golf team

Walker High School, La. graduate Landon Covington signed a national letter of intent today with the Holmes Community College golf team.

Covington said the hospitality shown by Head Coach Kay Jenkins and the Holmes staff made his decision an easy one. "First of all, Coach Jenkins has been really nice and welcoming to us," Covington said. "After she showed us everything, it's been awesome for her to be there for us. It's been a blessing to find a school where I can play golf and find a place that has such a great looking program. I'll have something to motivate me while I'm in school. All the people here are really nice."

He said looking at the results from last year, he expects to excel this season as a Bulldog. "Seeing all of the guys on the website has been really cool too," he said. "I've seen some really good scores from their guys. I'm going to expect good players that I'm going to be playing against and beside. I think it's going to be fun to have people at that level to play with."

Playing at Walker was instrumental in his being able to play golf in college. "High school was a lot of fun to get to play golf with some guys that I knew before," he explained. "It got me to a high point in my game and really helped me out. The competitive level is outstanding compared to the 2A schools. You've got talent that just is crazy. It helped me to play a lot better."

If he had to choose an area that is his strong suit, he'd say his short game. "That's helped me bail out a lot," he said. "It's probably saved me once or twice.

"I've got a decent game," he added. "My biggest thing is that I can show heart. I can work at anything but I'm not going to give up until it's improved. I work hard at anything I do."

He will attend classes on the Goodman Campus and then commute to Ridgeland to practice and prepare for the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College tournaments in the fall and spring. He plans to major in secondary education at Holmes and minor in history.

Covington is the son of Terry and Ginger Covington.
