Bulldogs open Region 23 Tournament play Thursday at home vs. Hinds

GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs will go into the Region 23 Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face the No. 12 seed Hinds Community College Bulldogs on Thursday in Goodman at 6:30 p.m.

Holmes finished the regular season at 20-7 overall and 9-5 in the MACCC while Hinds finished 16-14 overall and 6-8 in the MACCC. The winner of the game will face No. 4 seed Gulf Coast on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Perkinston.

Other teams participating (with seeding) include: No. 1 Itawamba, No. 2 Southwest, No. 3 Jones, No. 4 Gulf Coast, No. 6 Pearl River, No. 7 Coahoma, No. 8 Northwest, No. 9 Southern-Shreveport, No. 10 Northeast and No. 11 Co-Lin. Northwest plays Southern Shreveport, Coahoma plays Northeast and Pearl River plays Co-Lin in the other first round games. The Northwest-Southern Shreveport winner will play Itawamba, the Coahoma/Northwest winner will play Southwest and the Pearl River/Co-Lin winner will play Jones.

Holmes is led in scoring by Trey Alexander, averaging 13.7 points per game. Markalon Rochell averages 11.9 points per game, and Jhamien Smith averages 10.6. The leading rebounder is Rochell with 4.4 rebounds per game followed by Smith and David Washington with 4.1 per game.

As a team, the Bulldogs are averaging 78.3 points per game and are shooting 50 percent from the floor, 34.5 percent from three-point range and 65.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Holmes is giving up 70 points per game.

Hinds is led by Terrance Clark, who is averaging 14.4 points per game. Austin Ratliff is averaging 13.9 points per game and Daveon Henry is averaging 13.4 points per game. Abubakar Cham is averaging 9 rebounds per game while Ratliff brings in 6.4 rebounds per game.

As a team, the Hinds Bulldogs are averaging 79 points per game and are shooting 47.7 percent from the floor, 35.1 percent from the three-point line and 67.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Hinds is giving up 74.9 points per game.
