SENATOBIA --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs advanced to the semi-finals of the MACJC State Tournament here today with an 85-57 with over the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs at Northwest Mississippi Community College.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 21-3 overall. Holmes will play Pearl River on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Wildcats defeated the East Mississippi Lions, 80-63, in their first round game.
Holmes led 37-25 halftime before outscoring Gulf Coast, 48-32, in the second half.
The Holmes Bulldogs led 16-6 with 12:27 left to play in the first half. A Mikkel Norment bucket and free throw put Holmes up 26-20 with 5:53 left in the first half. Norment's layup with 3:40 left to play in the half made the score 30-20. Spencer then hit two three-pointers late in the half to make the score 37-25 at halftime.
Holmes went up 15 after a shot from Justin Johnson with 12:45 left in the game. The Bulldogs held a 10-point lead with 10:05 to play after a basket from Kassim Nicholson. A Spencer three-pointer and a Marquell Carter three-pointer within two minutes of each other put Holmes up by 16 points at 66-50 with 5:48 left in the game. Holmes led 78-54 with 1:20 after a baseline dunk from Nicholson.
Norment led the Bulldogs with 18 points including three three-pointers while Spencer had 17 points with five three-pointers. Nicholson and Javon Franklin had 12 while Johnson added 11. Franklin had nine rebounds and Carter had seven.
The Bulldogs shot 52.5 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from the three-point line and 58.3 from the free-throw line.
