Bulldogs christen new Ras Branch field with 48-6 win over Delta
GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs picked up a big North Division win Thursday over the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans, 48-6, at the new and improved Ras Branch Stadium.
The stadium went from a natural surface to artificial turf and added LED lighting to the facility. Holmes improved to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the MACCC. Holmes travels to Senatobia Thursday night at 7 p.m. to face Northwest Mississippi Community College.
Holmes got on the scoreboard in the first quarter on a 12-yard touchdown run by J.J. Grant. Will Carter's extra point put Holmes up 7-0 with 10:02 left in the quarter.
The Bulldogs increased the lead to 14-0 with 5:59 left in the quarter when Philip Short found A.J. Davis IV on a 54-yard touchdown pass. Carter's extra point was good.
Holmes added another score in the first when Short found Bryceton Spencer on a seven-yard touchdown pass. Carter's extra point was good, and Holmes led 21-0.
The Bulldogs' final score of the first half came with 11:32 left in second when Wykece Johnson scored from a yard out. Carter's extra point made it 28-0 Holmes at the break.
Mississippi Delta took advantage of a Bulldog miscue to start the third when they took in a Bulldog fumble for a score. The extra point attempt failed, and Holmes led 28-6 with 13:54 to go in the third.
Luke Moffett nailed a 42-yard field goal with 11:26 to go in the third to make it 31-6 Holmes leading at that point.
Deriaun Townsend scored for the Bulldogs with 1:17 left in the quarter to put Holmes up 38-6.
The Bulldog defense got in on the scoring when Robert Jennings picked up a fumble and raced 85 yards for the score with 10:54 left in the fourth. Moffett's extra point made it 45-6.
Moffett nailed a 21-yard field goal with 4:06 left in the game to end the scoring at 48-6.
Short ended the game 24-of-49 for 244 yards and two touchdowns. Davis caught six passes for 101 yards. Grant had 57 yards on nine carries.
Jennings had five tackles and three tackles for loss and one sack. Jeremiah Kirk had two tackles for loss while Parviz King, Kabron Purifoy, Vontrez Rush and Commondre Cole each had a tackle for loss in the game.
