Bulldogs pick up North Division win over No. 15 Coahoma
CLARKSDALE --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs improved to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in the North Division here Saturday after defeating the No. 15 ranked Coahoma Community College Tigers, 28-21, in overtime.
Holmes will play Northeast in North Division action on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Ras Branch Stadium is still under construction and the venue for Thursday's game hasn't been finalized yet.
Coahoma scored first after they returned a punt for a touchdown. The extra point was good, and Coahoma led 7-0 with 13:43 left in the first.
The Bulldogs answered the score as Vontrez Rush scored from two yards out. Will Carter's extra point was good, and the game was tied at seven with 10 minutes left in the first.
Coahoma then took advantage of another Bulldog miscue in the second quarter to go up 14-7 after a made extra point with 11:18 left in the first half. Coahoma led 14-7 at halftime.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 14 when Philip Short found Kerrick Ross on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 8:39 left in the third. Carter's extra point was good.
Holmes scored with 57 seconds left in the game when Jahiem Shack hauled in a pass from Short. Carter's extra point gave Holmes the 21-14 lead.
Coahoma answered the score with 10 seconds left in the game and made the extra point forcing overtime.
The Bulldogs got the ball first in overtime, and Short found Ross again from eight yards out for the game-winning touchdown. Carter's extra point was good.
The Bulldogs stopped Coahoma on their try in overtime to secure the win. Coahoma first play was a loss of one on a rush. On second down, a pass fell incomplete. On third down, Reid Pulliam sacked the Tigers for a loss of 23 yards, and on fourth down, the Tigers fumbled the ball and Commondre Cole got credit for a fumble recovery to end the game.
Short finished with 261 yards on 36-of-53 passing and three touchdowns. Shack had eight catches for 77 yards. Jarvis Rush had 11 catches for 68 yards, and Ross had nine catches for 55 yards. Deriaun Townsend had 10 carries for 51 yards.
Pulliam had 12 tackles including three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. He also had a forced fumble and a pass breakup. Laquan Robinson had two tackles for loss while Parviz King, Joshua Lloyd and Kendall McCallum each had one tackle for loss and Breon Jordan had a half tackle for loss. Chris Walley had one sack and 2.5 tackles for loss, Yaphet Hearn had one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss while Laterrance Cassels and Tyrese Fields each had a half sack and a half tackle for loss.
