Magandy and Boatman sign with Mississippi College
Two mainstays along the offensive front for the Holmes Community College Bulldogs have signed letters of intent with Mississippi College for next season.
Porter Magandy, a 6'3 250 pound tackle, came to Holmes from Germantown High School and Jordan Boatman, a 6' 300 pound center, joined the Bulldogs from Starkville High School signed on the dotted line with the Choctaws late Wednesday.
Magandy said the education standpoint made his decision easy to go to MC.
"They were telling me about applying for jobs and that a Mississippi College degree means more than other degrees from other schools," Magandy said. "Obviously there will be an end to football, and I want to be in a spot where I can excel in life and make enough to do the things I like to do like hunt and fish."
He said he'll major in entrepreneurship or business. "I've thought about starting my own business before like a guiding service and knowing the basics of business would help me a lot," said Magandy.
Magandy played linebacker at Germantown and adjusted to the offensive line for Holmes.
"It was definitely a lot more fun than I anticipated," Magandy said. "With the triple option, it was pretty easy for a guy like me with a defensive background to come in and do good. You are really coming off low and tackling people without wrapping up. Instead of wrapping up you are putting your hands on them on driving them back."
He said coaching helped in the transition. "Having coaches that could teach me how to do it was big," he said. "Coach (Brad) Bustle and Coach (Cob) Summers really helped me to do great."
Magandy said he made some good friends at Holmes such as Monty Williams and Easton Curry as a freshman and Johnny Moss, Blake Backel, Kaleb Cadiere and Jack Clunan as a sophomore. "We've already played golf together and probably will do that again soon."
Boatman said after visiting with the coaches at MC, his decision was an easy one. "I felt that it was the best choice for me," Boatman said. "I got along with all the coaches, and they were friendly. I thought it was the best situation for me to go into."
He said he'll major in criminal justice at MC.
He, like Magandy, had great things to say about Holmes. "I really enjoyed every second down there," Boatman said. "I met a whole lot of good people. All the coaches I got along with, and we just kept getting better and better. This year wasn't as best as I would have liked it, but I got to be a part of the team. It was just a fun experience for me down there.
"Mostly I'll miss all the friends I made down there," he said. "I had some excellent teachers, too and some great coaches. I'll miss all of them."
As a freshman, Boatman played right guard for the Bulldogs. He and Magandy helped the Bulldogs lead the NJCAA in rushing yards during the 2019 season.
This year, he played center, which was new for him. "It was a little different than just finding my guy and coming off the ball," Boatman explained. "It wasn't as bad as I was thinking. I had in mind I wanted to play guard, but once I put my mind to doing center, I actually did pretty good in most games."
MC plans to move Boatman back to right guard.
Magandy and Boatman said that COVID-19 affected the Choctaw season this year and expect to play in the spring for the Choctaws. The schedule has not been finalized as of yet.
