Bulldogs pick up 35-27 win over Wolves

WESSON --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs picked up a 35-27 non-division win here Thursday night over the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves to move to 5-2 overall.

Holmes will play Northeast Mississippi Community College on Saturday, Oct. 21 for Homecoming at 3 p.m. The game can be watched at or listened to on the Bulldog Radio Network.

After a solid kickoff return to start the game, the Wolves had a short field from their own 13. On their third play, the Wolves picked up a four yard rushing touchdown and extra point to go up 7-0 with 13:50 left in the quarter.

The Bulldogs answered right back after getting a solid kickoff return from sophomore Kavonte Younger to the Co-Lin 42 yard line. Holmes ran five plays before sophomore Matthew Pleasant scored from three yards out with 10:42 left to play in the first quarter. Freshman kicker Connor McKay's extra point was good, and the game was tied at seven.

Holmes scored again late in the first quarter when freshman quarterback Jesse Wilson connected with sophomore receiver Steven Burdette on a 29-yard touchdown pass. McKay's kick put Holmes up 14-7 with 2:47 left in the first quarter.

Cameryn Brent, who finished the game with 176 yards on 35 carries, then got on the scoreboard with an 11-yard touchdown of his own with 5:30 left in the second quarter to put Holmes up 21-7 after McKay's extra point.

The Wolves added a rushing touchdown just before half to bring the score tighter at 21-14 after the extra point was good.

Co-Lin tied the game at 21 in the third quarter on a rushing touchdown and extra point with 3:34 left in the quarter.

Holmes answered just before the third quarter ended when sophomore running back Sanchez Berry broke loose down the home sidelines for a 41-yard touchdown. McKay's kick put the Bulldogs back up 28-21 with 24 seconds left in the third.

The Wolves scored with 10:41 left in the quarter on a rushing touchdown but were unable to tie the game after freshman defensive lineman Brylon Fowler blocked the extra point to make it 28-27 Holmes.

Holmes added a score with 5:56 to play to secure the win when Wilson connected with Younger from 36 yards out. McKay's kick ended all scoring at 35-27.

Berry had four carries for 63 yards. Wilson was 4-of-6 for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Holmes finished with 325 yards on the ground on 61 carries.

Freshman linebacker Lorenzo McCaskill was credited with nine tackles in the game while freshman defensive back Chris Marshall had seven and sophomore linebacker Vada King had six.
