Bulldogs finish 2014 with a 37-20 win at Northeast

BOONEVILLE --- The Holmes Community College used a powerful running game of over 400 yards to topple the Northeast Mississippi Community College Tigers here Thursday night, 37-20, in the season finale for both teams.

With the win, the Bulldogs finished the season 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the North Division.

Sophomore running back Mitchell Cunningham and freshman running back Aquindus Henson each scored two rushing touchdowns to lead the way for the Bulldogs while sophomore quarterback Jamario Benson added one.

Northeast jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Brett Thompson found Khalid Kornegay from 45 yards out. The extra point from Cesar Resendiz was good with 2:20 left in the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs answered the Northeast score early in the second quarter when Cunningham scored his first touchdown from five yards out. Cole Ballard's extra point was no good, and Northeast led 7-6 with 14:28 to play in the first half.

Less than three minutes later, the Bulldogs added another score, this time from Henson from nine yards out. Ballard's extra point gave the Bulldogs the 13-7 lead, and the Bulldogs never trailed again.

Henson scored his second touchdown with 8:03 to play in the second quarter from a yard out. Ballard's extra point put Holmes up 20-7.

The Tigers answered used trickery on their next score as Thompson handed off to LaVontis Smith who threw a 16-yard touchdown to Joe Horn, Jr. Resendiz's extra point made the score 20-14 with 2:21 to play in the first half.

Holmes got a 33-yard field goal from Ballard to end their scoring in the first half with 38 seconds left.

Holmes increased the lead to 30-14 with 51 seconds when Benson scored from a yard out. Ballard's extra point was good.

The Tigers final score came with 5:42 left in the game when Thompson scored from a yard out. Resendiz's extra point was good to make the score 30-20 Holmes. The two-point pass failed.

Holmes final score of the game came with 4:52 to play when Cunningham broke loose on a 52-yard run. Ballard's kick was good.
