Bulldogs use big fourth quarter to pull out 27-8 win over the Trojans
GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to pick up a huge 27-8 North Division win here Thursday night over Mississippi Delta Community College.
With the win, the Bulldogs went to 2-3 overall and more importantly 1-1 in the North Division. Holmes hosts Northwest Mississippi Community College on Thursday. The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first in the first quarter when the Bulldog defense surrounded Delta quarterback Devin Adams and tackled him in the endzone for a safety with 13:11 left in the quarter.
Holmes added three more points before the half ended and led 5-0 at halftime. Cole Ballard hit a 28-yard field goal with 7:09 left in the second quarter.
Ballard added another field goal from 21 yards out with 3:18 to play in the third to make it 8-0.
Mississippi Delta answered early in the fourth quarter when Jaylon Daniels found Derrick Jenkins from 13 yards out. The two-point pass failed giving the Bulldogs the two-point edge with 13:50 to play in the game.
Holmes answered the score on its next drive when the Bulldogs faked a punt and Odell Spencer took the ball in from 33 yards out on a reverse. The extra point failed and made the score 14-6 with 11:50 to play in the game.
Sophomore running back Mitchell Cunningham then went to work for the Bulldogs as he picked up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. His first score came from 34 yards out with 8:59 left in the game. Ballard's extra point was no good, and Holmes led 20-6. His second score came with a minute to play as he carried five Trojans defenders into the endzone from six yards out. The extra point was good.
Delta added a safety minutes before when Bulldog punter Dre Massey ran out of the endzone deep in Bulldog territory with 5:02 to play.
Cunningham finished with 12 carries for 150 yards while Michael Howard had 59 yards on seven carries and Jamario Benson had 49 yards on 22 carries. Antreon Bennett and Mohamed Camara each had eight tackles for the Bulldogs while Ryhean McMorris and Jamal Veazey each had seven tackles. Traver Jung picked up two interceptions in the game while Spencer and Veazey each added one.
