Bulldogs open the season with a 28-21 win over the Hinds Eagles

GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldog offense put up 421 yards of total offense en route to a 28-21 non-division victory here Thursday night over the Hinds Community College Eagles.

Holmes sophomore running back Mitchell Cunningham had two scores for the Bulldogs, one from five yards and one from 85 yards as he raced untouched down the home sidelines for the score. He finished with 15 carries for 130 yards on the night.

With the win, the Bulldogs move to 1-0 on the season and travel to Pearl River Community College next Thursday at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the Bulldog Football Network either by listening on 101.1 FM, 103.9 FM or 100.1 FM or at breezynews.com. Freshman running back Aquindus Henson got the Bulldogs on the scored first with 9:40 to play in the first quarter as he raced in from three yards out. Cole Ballard's kick gave the Bulldogs the 7-0 lead.

Hinds answered the score on a one-yard run from James Summers. Joseph Houston's extra point tied the game at seven with 5:31 to play.

The Bulldogs then retook the lead with 10:00 to play in the half as Mitchell Cunningham scored his first touchdown from five yards out. Ballard's kick was good to make it 14-7 in favor of the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs scored again in the third quarter as Arthur Turner scored form five yards out. Ballard's extra point made the score 21-7 with 5:04 to play in the third quarter.

Hinds added another touchdown with 9:02 left in the fourth when Joshua Dixon scored from three yards out. Houston's extra point made the score 21-14 Holmes.

Cunningham scored his second touchdown of the night with 5:37 to play in the game as he raced 85 yards for the score. Ballard's extra point made the score 28-14.

Hinds' Summers got his second score of the night when he scored from five yards out. Houston's extra point made the score 28-21 Holmes with 1:47 left in the game.

The Bulldogs fielded the onside kick attempt but were later forced to punt giving the ball back to the Eagles. As the horn sounded, the Bulldogs knocked the ball down inside their own five to end the game.

The Bulldogs finished the game with 65 rushes for 358 yards. Sophomore quarterback Jamario Benson had 26 carries for 70 yards while Henson had 12 carries for 59 yards and Turner had eight carries for 39 yards. The Bulldogs completed three of five passes for 63 yards.

Sophomore Lyndon Johnson led the Bulldogs with nine tackles and three sacks while freshman Andrew Walker, freshman Mohamed Camara and freshman Jamal Veazey each had eight tackles. Broderick Fordham also had a sack in the game.
