Bulldogs can't hold early lead over Rangers; fall 32-20
SENATOBIA --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-6 lead over the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers here Thursday, but Northwest reeled off 26 straight points before the Bulldogs scored again to take the key North Division game, 32-20.
With the win, the Bulldogs' hope of making the MACJC state playoffs were dashed as they fell to 3-2 in the division and 3-4 overall. The Bulldogs will face Hinds in Goodman on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the Bulldog Football Network or watched on the Holmes iHigh channel at holmesathletic.ihigh.com. The Bulldogs took advantage of a Ranger turnover early in the first quarter when Damian Baker fumbled the ball after being hit by the Bulldog defense, and Jammie Jamison picked up the ball and raced 41 yards to the Ranger nine. Dennis Robertson then called his own number on the first play and scored the touchdown with 12:06 to go in the first quarter. Stephan Lloyd's extra point was good.
On the next drive, Baker broke through the Bulldog defense and scored from 48 yards out. Chase Carpenter's extra point was no good, and Holmes held the 7-6 lead with 10:34 to play in the first quarter.
Holmes' answered the score on the ensuing kickoff when Jacorie Ousley fielded the punt at his own seven and raced 93 yards for the score with 10:17 to play. Lloyd's kick was good, and the Bulldogs led 14-6.
Northwest's Carpenter added two field goals to bring the Rangers to within two points at 14-12. The first field goal came with 8:24 left in the first from 35 yards out while the other came with 14:05 to play in the first half from 32 yards out. The Rangers then took the lead for good when Baker scored on a 29-yard pass from Dominique Harris from 29 yards out. The Rangers led 18-14 at halftime.
The Rangers scored with 7:52 left in the third when Percy O'Bannon scored from two yards out, and Carpenter added the extra point to make the score 25-14. The Rangers finished their scoring in the game with 11:07 to play in the fourth quarter when Harris ran in from nine yards out and Carpeter added the extra point.
Holmes' final score came with 5:14 to play in the game when reserve quarterback Nick Glover scored from three yards out. Lloyd's extra point was blocked making the score 32-20.
Robertson finished the game 11-of-24 for 80 yards, two interceptions and was sacked five times by the Ranger defense. Jonathan Rumph had seven receptions for 63 yards. Leading rusher was Richard Hampton who had 126 yards on 13 carries including a run of 48 yards.
Leading Bulldog defenders were Marquiz Edget with 11 tackles; Dalvin Taylor with 10 tackles; Terrell Cason with nine and one tackle for loss; Quay Watt with eight tackles; and Eric Hilton with eight tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss. Kris Givens had seven tackles and three pass breakups while Bobby Hill had five tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss.
