Bulldogs defeat Wildcats; pull season series to 1-1
GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs repaid the Pearl River Community College Wildcats here Thursday night for an early season loss by winning the close battle, 52-50.
With the win, the Bulldogs went to 4-1 overall and will play in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Classic on Nov. 19-20. The Bulldogs play Pensacola State College at 4:30 p.m. on Monday and Gulf Coast on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Pearl River held a two-point lead with 16:36 to play in the first half on a layup from Jeremy Hollimon. Holmes then took an 8-7 lead on a three-pointer from Travis Johnson, who led the Bulldogs in scoring with 19, with 15:43. the Bulldogs increased the lead to five on two free throws by Demarcus Lewis at 14-9 with 11:26 to play and then 11 points on two free from Tamarico Wilson with 8:36 to play in the half. Holmes led 33-26 at halftime.
In the second half, the Bulldogs held an eight point lead at 34-26 with 18:21 to play in the game and held a six point lead with 13:06 on a layup from Johnson at 38-32. Pearl River then tied the game at 42 on two free throws from Frank Snow with eight minutes to play. Pearl River held a temporary one point lead but the Bulldogs captured the lead back and held on for the win.
Wilson had 12 points for the Bulldogs. Johnson and Daniel Francis each added six rebounds while Lewis had five.
