Holmes falls in MACJC State Tournament's opening round

RIDGELAND --- Mississippi Gulf Coast captured both the men's and women's state soccer titles here Sunday with wins over Pearl River Community College. Gulf Coast won both matches with identical 1-0 scores.
Holmes Community College served as host of the tournament after the men's team finished the season as the North No. 1 seed. Itawamba was the North Division No. 2 team on the men's side. Pearl River was the South No. 1 seed while Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College was the South No. 2. On the women's side, Hinds was the North No. 1 seed while the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs were the North No. 2 seed. Pearl River's women were the South No. 1 seed while Gulf Coast was the South Division No. 2 seed.
In the women's final, Gulf Coast's Kelsi Weaver scored in the 61st minute on an assist by Briana Holmes.
In the men's final, Gulf Coast's Harrison Russell scored on a penalty kick in the 74th minute to give the Bulldogs the title.
In women's matches on Saturday, Gulf Coast defeated Hinds, 1-0 and Pearl River knocked off Holmes Community College, 5-0.
In the Gulf Coast-Hinds game, Torie Zimmer scored in 79th minute for the Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs. In the Pearl River-Holmes game, Emmaleigh Davis scored two goals (51st minute and 67th minute) to lead the Lady Wildcats. Analejsia Lee added a goal in the 20th minute, Jordan Organ had one in the 67th minute and Ashlee Arnau added one in the 67th minute.
On the men's side Saturday, Gulf Coast knocked off Holmes 4-1 and Pearl River defeated Itawamba, 4-2.
In the battle of the Bulldogs, Gulf Coast used four different scorers to pull out the victory. Jason Diehl scored on an Anuar Pavia assist to put Gulf Coast up 1-0 in the 26th minute. Harrison Russell then scored in the 28th minute and Paul Hull in the 33rd minute to increase the lead to 3-0 before Holmes' Wesley Noble scored in the 78th minute. Gulf Coast added another goal in the 88th minute on a Dallas Mansfield goal and Garret Lawson assist.
Pearl River jumped out 2-0 on goals by Tyler Hatch in the 4th minute and Garrett Head in the 24th minute. ICC's Houston Walker scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Hatch added his second goal of the night on a free kick in the 60th minute and James Zanelli scored in the 64th minute to make the score, 4-1. Abraheem Saleh scored ICC's final goal in the 87th minute.
