GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College men's basketball returns eight players from last year's team which made appearances in both the MACJC and Region XXIII postseason tournaments. Holmes is ranked No. 25 in the NJCAA preseason poll.
The Bulldogs, who went 16-10 overall and 9-3 in the North Division, went into the MACJC State Tournament as the North No. 2 and defeated Gulf Coast before falling to Jones in the semifinals. The Bulldogs then faced Jones in the opening round of the Region XXIII Tournament and fell to the Bobcats.
Returning players include: Trevais Spencer (6'3 guard from Grenada), Mikkel Norment (6'1 guard from Somerville, Tenn.), Justin Johnson (6'6 forward from Martin, Tenn.), Stanley Williams (6' guard from Belzoni), D'Michael Stribling (6'6 forward from Ridgeland), Jonah Simpson (5'10 guard from Ridgeland), Marquell Carter (6'5 forward from Greenville) and Joshua Everette (6'1 guard from Duck Hill). Newcomers include: Kassim Nicholson (6'6 guard/forward from Jackson), Javion Jordan (5'10 guard from Canton), Kortez Wade (6'4 forward from Durant), Javon Franklin (6'6 forward from Little Rock, Ark.), Jermaal Rogers (6'4 guard/forward from Canton) and Winford Ross (6'7 forward from Madison). All the newcomers are freshmen except for Wade, who played at Mississippi Delta a few years ago.
Spencer, Norment and Johnson each averaged double figures last season for the Bulldogs. Spencer averaged 13.7 ppg, Norment 13.5 ppg and Johnson 11.8 ppg. Spencer averaged 4.5 rebounds per game while Johnson had 4.3 rpg and Carter had 4.1 rpg. Norment led the team in steals with 1.3 steals per game while Spencer had 1.2 spg. Williams led the team in assists with 3.4 assists per game while Simpson had 2.4 apg.
The season opens at Copiah-Lincoln on Nov. 2 at 8 p.m. The home schedule starts on Monday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. versus Memphis Prep.
