GOODMAN --- The No. 3 Holmes Community College ranked Holmes Community College Bulldogs had a battle on their hands tonight in Goodman. The Bulldogs fought and scrapped with the Coahoma Community College Tigers the entire game before pulling out the 10-point win, 30-20.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the North Division. Holmes hosts Northwest next Thursday night in Goodman at 6:30 p.m. Listen live on the Bulldog Football Network or watch at holmesccmedia.com.
Neither team was able to put points on the scoreboard in the first quarter. The Bulldogs broke into the scoring column early in the second quarter when freshman kicker Connor McKay nailed a 32-yard field goal to put Holmes up 3-0 with 10:42 left in the first half.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard with 5:32 remaining in the half when Jaylin Jones broke loose on a 23-yard touchdown run. The extra point was no good, and Coahoma led 6-3.
The Bulldogs answered the score with one of its own on the ensuing kickoff when Caleb Roebuck fielded the Tiger kickoff at the 20 and raced 80 yards for the score. McKay's extra point was good, and the Bulldogs led 10-6 with 5:13 left to play in the half.
Holmes increased the lead to 17-6 in the third quarter when the Tiger punter mishandled the punt, and freshman defensive back Chris Marshall picked it up and raced it in from 35 yards out. McKay's extra point was good with 5:07 to go in the third quarter.
The Tigers once again answered the Bulldog score when Jones raced in again from 31 yards out. The two-point pass was no good, and Holmes held a 17-12 lead with 2:11 left to play in the third.
Holmes finally got an offensive touchdown in the fourth quarter when sophomore running back Cameryn Brent scored from five yards out. The Bulldogs went for two but the two-point pass was no good, and Holmes led 23-12 with 9:20 left in the game.
The Tigers last score in the game came with 6:50 to play when they connected on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Trey Mitchell to Eric Moore. The two-point pass to Chris Claybrooks was good. Holmes led 23-20.
Brent added another score with 4:16 to play in the game when he raced in from 26 yards out. McKay's kick was good ending all scoring at 30-20.
The Bulldog offense finished with 354 total yards with 240 of those coming on the ground. Brent carried the ball 22 times for 122 yards and two scores while freshman quarterback Jesse Wilson had 79 yards on 16 carries. Freshman wide receiver Shaun Walton had three catches for 64 yards in the game.
