Bulldogs go to .500 on the season with 35-34 win over the Hinds Eagles
GOODMAN --- A gutsy two-point pass reception from Bulldog freshman receiver Daniel Huffines from Dennis Robertson with 43 ticks left in Thursday's game lifted the Holmes Community College Bulldogs to a 35-34 win over the Hinds Community College Eagles.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 4-4 on the season. The Bulldogs host the Coahoma Community College Tigers on Thursday in the last regular season and North Division game of the year at 6:30 p.m. in the 2012 Armed Forces Appreciation Game. Trailing the Hinds Eagles, 34-27, the Bulldogs mounted a scoring drive from their own 12 yard line. A big 21-yard pass play to Jonathan Rumph and a 13-yard run from Jacorie Ousley helped move the Bulldogs to the Hinds 40 before the Bulldogs were faced with a fourth down and three.
The Hinds defense then committed three consecutive penalties to give the Bulldogs the ball at the Hinds 15. On third and seven from the seven, another defensive penalty gave the Bulldogs a first down from the three. On third and five from the five, Robertson called his own number and bulled his way into the endzone for the score. After a Bulldog timeout, Holmes decided to go for the two-point play and the victory. Robertson found Huffines just inside the pylon for the score to put the Bulldogs up for good as the Bulldog defense knocked away a pass attempt in the endzone by Eagle quarterback Chris Nelson as time expired.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first quarter as Nelson raced in from 15 yards out with 11:52 to play in the first quarter. The extra point by Tyler Poe was no good.
After a Bulldog punt gave the ball back to the Eagles, freshman defensive back Terrell Cason intercepted Nelson at the Eagle 31, and he raced in for the touchdown. Stephan Lloyd's extra point was good with 8:11 to play in the first quarter giving the Bulldogs the 7-6 lead.
Hinds got on the scoreboard again in the first quarter when Jabari Baker took the handoff from Nelson and raced in from 86 yards out. Poe's extra point was good giving the Eagles the lead back at 13-6.
The lead only lasted a few seconds as Fred Franklin took the ensuing kickoff back 91 yards back for the touchdown with 3:27 left in the first quarter. Lloyd's kick was good, and the Bulldogs went back up 14-13.
As the second quarter began, Jeffrey Nason blocked a Poe punt, and Dalvin Taylor recovered at Eagle 30. On third down and four from the Hinds eight, Robertson found Rumph in the endzone with 12:07 to play in the first half. Lloyd's kick put the Bulldogs up 21-13.
Hinds answered the score with 5:29 to play as Nelson scored from a yard out on fourth and goal from the one. Poe's extra point was good to make the score 21-20, where the score stayed until halftime.
The Eagles took the lead back in the third quarter with 6:10 to play as Nelson scored again, this time from the one. Poe's extra point was no good, and Hinds led 26-21.
Holmes started a drive late in the third from their own 34. On this drive, the Eagles were flagged with five penalties, which helped the Bulldogs move down to the five along with an 11-yard run by Robertson and a 14-yard pass to Rumph from Robertson. Lloyd's extra point was no good, and Holmes led 27-26 with 21 seconds left in the third.
Hinds took the lead back in the fourth quarter on another Nelson touchdown, this one from the two. Nelson then connected with Khiry Lucas on the two-point conversion to give Hinds the 34-27 lead.
