Bulldogs score 24 unanswered to pull out 24-14 win over Mississippi Delta
GOODMAN ---Mississippi Delta Community College jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the Holmes Community College Bulldogs Saturday, but the Bulldogs scored 24 straight points including 17 points in the fourth quarter to pull out the North Division victory to move to 3-0 and sit atop the North.
With the win, the Bulldogs went to 3-2 overall while Delta fell to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the North Division.
Delta got on the scoreboard first in the game in the first quarter on a five-yard run from Justin Leavy with 4:45 to play. The extra point from Evan Russell was no good, and Delta held the 6-0 lead.
The Trojans then added another score when Leavy connected with Jarred Wade from nine yards out with 13:21 left in the first half. Darnell Taylor carried in the two-point conversion to go up 14-0.
Holmes then pulled to 14-7 when Dennis Robertson found Jonathan Rumph from 30 yards out with 5:28 left in the half. Stephan Lloyd's extra point was good.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 14-10 when Lloyd connected on a 23-yard field goal with 12:12 to play in the fourth quarter. Holmes then took the 17-14 lead when Robertson pounded his way in from two yards out, and Lloyd was again good.
Delta went for it on fourth and six from their own 46, and a Leavy pass fell incomplete to give Holmes the ball. Holmes put the game away with 2:12 to play when Robertson connected with Quardarius Armour on a 29-yard touchdown on fourth down and seven. Lloyd's kick was good.
Robertson went 20-of-31 for 267 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 32 yards rushing with a touchdown. The Bulldogs leading receiver was Jonathan Rumph, who had seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. Armour had four catches for 41 yards and a touchdown while Daniel Huffines had five catches for 66 yards.
Defensively, Quay Watt led the Bulldogs with 11 tackles while Eric Hilton had 10 tackles including two tackles for loss. Marquiz Edget had a sack and two tackles for loss while Bobby Hill had two tackles for loss and Eric Worthen and Richard Mitchell each had one tackle for loss.
Holmes finished the game with 383 total yards to 220 for Delta.
