Bulldogs go 2-2 over the weekend
GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs went to .500 here Saturday and Sunday after losing two of three to Kellogg, Mich., and defeating Delgado, La.
Holmes defeated Kellogg, 16-6, in the first game on Friday and fell 4-3 in the second game. On Saturday, the Bulldogs fell to Kellogg, 4-3, and then defeated Delgado in the nightcap 3-1.
In game one on Friday, the Bulldogs exploded for 16 runs on 11 hits. Darius Knight led the Bulldogs offensively with four hits. Jocobby Robinson and Trennis Grant each added two hits a piece. Rafiel Johnson, Steven Blanchard, and Jeffrey Davis each added one hit a piece. Channing Sanders (1-0) picked up his first win of the year with 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Sanders allowed only two hits while striking out three. Taylor Burrell started for the Bulldogs and pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up six runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out four in the no decision.
In game two on Friday, the Bulldogs blew a three run lead as Kellogg scored two runs in the fourth, a run in the sixth, and the go ahead run in the seventh. Tyji Hawkins (0-2) picked up the loss in relief. Hawkins pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and striking out one. Chris Hutchinson started for the Bulldogs and pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up two runs on two hits and striking out five. The Bulldogs had six hits in the ball game. Rafiel Johnson led the offense with two hits. Jocobby Robinson, Trennis Grant, Blake Bowman, and Danny Alford each added one hit a piece.
In the first game on Saturday, trailing 4-3 the Bulldogs had bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the seventh but could not find a way to push any runs across. Offensively, the Bulldogs only managed four hits in the ballgame. Darius Knight, Blake Bowman, Jordan Taylor, and Danny Alford each had one hit a piece. Rafiel Johnson (1-2) suffered the loss with a complete game effort. Johnson allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out eight.
In the final game on Saturday, the Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to break a 1-1 tie. Steven Blanchard (3-0) picked up his third win of the year with a complete game. Blanchard allowed one run on five hits while striking out five. Offensively, the Bulldogs had five hits in the ballgame. Darius Knight, Jordan Taylor, Jeffrey Davis, Shawn Stricklin, and Danny Alford each had one hit a piece.
Up Next: The Bulldogs will host Henry Ford in a four game series this Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10. The doubleheaders will begin at 2:00 pm each day.
